Two Costumes Circa 1893 -1896 French or German Doll 29" - 30"
This pattern presents two versions of the same basic dress. The first has a tucked yoke which is shirred, with the tucks forming tiny ruffles. It is decorated with ribbon ruching at the neck, and the sleeves. The large rosette completes the trim at center back. Skirt is plain and full. The basic coat sleeve is tight from wrist to elbow where it expands into the enormous "balloon" sleeve so characteristic of the times. The second dress has a plain yoke which is completely covered with a large six pointed bertha collar. Ribbon bows are set at each point, and a large frill of machine embroidered lace forms a second collar over the pointed Bertha. Sleeves are decorated with bows and a wide frill of machine-embroidered lace. Skirt is full, trimmed with a single deep tuck, with a band of lace edging added under the tuck. Lingerie hat has wide brim shirred on wire and a moderately puffed crown. Ribbon ties and lavish bows trim the hat.
Fabric suggestions: For either view, a summer dress and hat would be charming made up in light summery fabrics, voile, batiste, organdy, lace or net, with colored underskirts. For a more elegant look, use silks, failles, brocades, light-weight woolens, or velveteens.
