Dress and Bonnet Circa 1883 for French Doll 15" - 16" This costume is prettiest when made from two contrasting fabrics. Our model's jacket and bonnet are of a luscious cream brocade. The ruffles, for shirred front and back panels skirt ruffles, and self-trim are made of a soft blue silk. The couturier seamstresses of the 1800's worked wonders with trimmings devised from the dress fabrics, referred to as "self-trim". We have endeavored to introduce you to two popular trimmings used, "shelling" and the "twisted frill". The Normandy-style bonnet with it's puffed crown is softened by crushing down and tacking across the front and at the sides, causing the crown to frame the face. Suggested Fabrics Fabrics suitable for the dress include silk or taffeta, and perhaps a floral striped, checked or self-patterned fabric of a slightly heavier weight for the jacket.
