YR 505  1880's French/German Dress $ 14.95

This lovely 1889 costume was adapted from one worn by "Paulina," a doll dressed for "The Youth's Companion," October issue. Paulina was modeled after the famed Jumeau dolls. Her clothes, as the dress pictured, would compliment both German and French Bebe's.

The doll's costume was made from a lovely old cream wool flannel infants' christening slip, heavily em-broidered with flowers and feather stitches. Some of the feather stitching was used down the jacket front and at the sleeve edges. For the bodice front we used 2 pieces of old satin ribbon, joined and gathered to fit the bodice. The pink of the roses on the ribbon was picked up in the contrast cording which bordered the jacket and sleeve edges. To soften the line of the jacket, lightly gathered cream lace was added. The pink was used again in the half cummerbund at the waist line and in two of the ruffles on the bonnet.

The bonnet utilized part of the embroidered slip for the head piece. Two ruffles of organdie were placed inside the bonnet brim to encourage the ruffles to fame the doll's face.

A similar affect can be obtained from an old flannel slip or by using more modern fabric like Vyella poly-ester sports fabric in soft cream color. The shirt edge can be scalloped by Machine. Three vertical tucks, 1/2" deep, can be added to the skirt and decorated by machine, using the decorative cams or by feather stitching. Likewise a strip of self-fabric could be feather-stitched, edged with lace and used to trim the jacket.
